Joyeux Banned Books Week!

As usual, though, the children's books which are so age-inappropriate that they're never even written get ignored. Except by us: 25 More Would-Be-Banned Children's Books (insert Tipper sticker here).

Coupla funny things.

1. When we were growing up, our hometown library had pet hamsters in the children's room. Do any libraries do that anymore? If so, here's something you can do when the kids aren't around. Or it could even be a library craft program, we guess, but it would have to be BYOH.

2. The other day, we noticed a contractor's van pulling into the construction site next door to our library. It was a concrete drilling company. Slogan on the van: "Your hole is our goal." We were still chuckling as we walked into work.

FSM holy days.

Today is the first day of a 5-day weekend for Pastafarians. Or it would be, were it not for religious discrimination in this country.

September 15: Birthday of Most Holy Prophet Marco Polo.

September 16: Friday! (Every Friday is a religious holiday.)

(Saturday and Sunday)

September 19: Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Since we're not being given the days off, we'll celebrate by playing the Flying Spaghetti Monster Game nonstop at the ref desk.

Don't hug that Teddy!

Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed!, which appears to have been orginally published last year, is coming out in a new, illustrated edition. The scary cover caricatures of Ted and Hillary could send Heather running in tears to both mommies, we think. Despite the description of the book as "well-crafted," indications are that its burlesque is poorly thought out: The story's version of the ACLU, which in real life defends students' rights to wear religious symbols in school, has a shit-fit over the Jesus picture that a couple boys have on their lemonade stand. How stupid is that?

Here's our submission to the publisher's cartoon caption contest: "So, you think it's okay to pee in the lemonade, just because your stand is a subsidiary of Halliburton?" We're already thinking we won't win, so we encourage our readers to submit their own entries there. Deadline is September 30.
